Sometimes the boom may be swung though the horizontal arc to create panning of the image frame. When this done with the camera pointed toward the axis of rotation, it creates a "Back Pan" (camera behind or in back of the pan axis). This can produce a very striking visual effect, with the background translating throught the image frame while the subject lingers and floats in the foreground. In the extreme case, the foreground may even move in the opposite direction of the background within the image frame.
The Back Pan effect is also possible with some degree of vertical boom motion, or apparent tilt, of the image frame. Also, the Back Pan may be performed with the camera looking above or below the axis of the boom, simply as a matter of how the boom is gripped. There is essentially no rigging delay to change from "underslung" to "overslung" configurations. The Hand Held Remote Camera Positioner is balanced along its axis, and may be supported in or moved through any physical orientation during a shot. This typically gives the operator many different ways to capture a given shot or move.
