The pan axis is fixed with respect to the boom. When the boom is held with the pan axis horizontal and the camera points along that axis, a command of pan motion results in roll. This effect may be seen in "Drum Roll". When the pan axis is vertical, imagery such as the overhead pan or spin are possible.
